To edit a matteberry PSD, you need either Adobe Photoshop or Photopea. Both work, so the real question is which one suits you.
What they are
Photoshop is Adobe's desktop app, and it is a paid product. Photopea is a free, web based alternative that runs in your browser and opens PSD files, so there is nothing to install.
Pick Photoshop if
- You already have it.
- You edit images often and like working in a desktop app.
Pick Photopea if
- You do not have Photoshop and do not want to pay for it.
- You want to try your first mockup today without installing anything.
- You are working on a computer that is not yours.
Will the mockup work the same in both?
Yes. The steps are the same. Find the layer called PLACE DESIGN HERE, double-click the smart object thumbnail, drop your design in and save. Our how-to guide shows what that thumbnail looks like in each app.
Whichever you choose
- Keep the original canvas size inside the smart object.
- Leave the prepared filters and layer structure alone.
- Use a transparent PNG for your design if you can.
If you are not sure, start with Photopea. It costs nothing to try, and you can always move to Photoshop later.
